This Family Should Come With A Disclaimer

I always say that nobody has a perfect family. You are lying if you think otherwise. I can recall meeting a friend at the home of one of their relatives. As soon as I walked in, I immediately regretted coming into this house. I was trying to give it a chance, but it was not getting any better. The music was loud, the kids were running wild, the smell of weed and Newport 100’s was strong. I was afraid his drunk uncles were about to fight over a dice game. Obviously, it is a holiday otherwise, I would not have come over here.

The house was not in the best neighborhood. My complaining stopped when I got into the kitchen. The food smelled great. I knew his mom and aunties were great cooks. That is the real reason I came over here.

He was late as usual, and I was not going to wait for him to arrive before I started eating. I had two full plates of food by the time he arrived. He came in the door drunk and high. We watched the game while he ate his food. I had room for dessert, so I helped myself to a few slices of sweet potato pie.

The food made coming here worth the trip. He fell asleep in his mom’s basement. The food and liquor finally got the best of him. I was trying to get his cousin’s number. She had dissed me since we were kids, but I was finally getting through to her. Then, the foolishness began. His uncles started an all brawl in the living room. One of teenagers on the porch yelled “world star,” which led to the other teenagers pulling out their phones to record this event for posterity.

They were fighting all over the living room. The women ran from the kitchen yelling at there husbands. His little uncle hit me a few times, but I shook it off. I was able to help the family break-up a few of the fights. The main event between the older uncles had moved to the middle of the streets.

These two had been at odds ever since they were kids. A few shots of gin and a slight disagreement is all it takes to set them off. The entire family had spilled out of the house to try to break-up the fight. It would take several police officers and a taser to end the sibling boxing match.

I had been over there as a child growing up, but never for a holiday. Now I see why my mother didn’t want me over here. He should have given me a warning or something. I found out later that this is a regular thing at their family events. The only person surprised by trhe evernts was me.
